If you look closely at this vintage photo of the Bluff Point Lighthouse you will notice a lady standing by the door. This is likely Mary Jane Herwerth who was the lighthouse keeper from 1881 to 1902. She had been appointed the keeper upon the death of her husband Major William E. Herwerth who had become keeper in 1878 and died in 1881. In this photo the shades or curtains were drawn to protect the 5th order Fresnel lens from the harmful rays of the sun. Because the Bluff Point Lighthouse is on Valcour Island it is often called the Valcour Island Lighthouse. (Lighthouse Digest archives photo.)
