Photo Caption:

The Boston Floating Hospital Ship as it cruised past Boston Lighthouse in the early 1900s. The vessel was a hospital shop for sick children that keep them out in the harbor to avoid the summer heat and enjoy the fresh air out on the water as well as for the enjoyment of being on the ocean. It held 200 beds. It was established in 1894 and was so successful that a new bigger ship, shown here was built in 1905. In 1927 it was destroyed by fire. Fortunately, no one was on board at the time. A replacement vessel was never rebuilt. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
