Photo Caption:

Captain Walter Lambeth Barnett is shown here in September of 1945 in his retirement years on the front porch of his house. He was in command of the Diamond Shoals Lightship LV 71 when it was sunk by a German U-Boat in August of 1918. Interestingly, his father James Jennette Barnett was an assistant keeper of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse from 1906 to 1907. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
