Photo Caption:

First assistant keeper Henry Jenkins sits on the front steps of Tillamook Rock Lighthouse amidst the salvaged scrap equipment he used to assemble his shortwave radio, shown on the second step, that provided the only communication during the storm. It took him an hour to make contact with mainland ham radio operators who relayed messages back and forth to the Lighthouse 17th District Office in Portland. Jenkins constructed the radio using parts from a standard broadcast receiving set, telephone receiver, dry batteries, and odds and ends of wire, tinfoil, brass, wax paper, and other fittings. Note the wood storm shutter over the basement window that was originally breached by the storm and flooded Jenkins in his bedroom on the main level during the height of the storm.
