Henry Matthew Cuskley (1874-1955) started his lighthouse career in 1897 as an assistant keeper at Cape Elizabeth Light Station “Two Lights” in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. He married Mary White, daughter of the head keeper Leander White, and Cuskley served as an assistant under his father-in-law until 1903 when he became the head keeper at Maine’s Libby Island Lighthouse. In 1912 he became the head keeper at Seguin Island Lighthouse, the highest lighthouse above water in Maine. However, upon the death of his father-in-law Leander White at Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, Henry M. Cuskley secured the position at Portsmouth where he would serve for the next 26 years.
