According to a 1930 district report, “several requests were received for assistance for relief of settlements in the lower Columbia, marooned by ice for nearly two weeks and seriously short of supplies and stock feed.” In addition to bringing the necessary commodities, the lighthouse tender Rose also brought the mail, which would have probably been of equal relief to the isolated towns.
