Stay Away
In 1935, Irving Conklin submitted this photo of a keeper with the lens in the lantern of the Los Angeles Harbor Lighthouse for a story in the Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine. The keeper in the photo appears to be Norman L. Francis who was the 2nd assistant keeper from 1926 to 1929 and the 1st assistant keeper from 1931 to 1934. The newspaper story, authored by head keeper Irving Conklin, was coauthored by Jean Bosquet and it was apparently Conkin’s hope that, through this story, it would discourage tourists from visiting the lighthouse. He wrote, “In fair weather we have as many as 125 sympathizers on one visiting day. The tourists have to only walk a couple of miles over the uneven rocks atop the breakwater to get to the light. I’m going to try and save a lot of them that long trek on the rocks and climb up the stairs to the sixth deck in this article. I’m going to tell all that I know about the lighthouse keeping business and about how lonely we get so they won’t have to come out and ask about it and scare my cat and my pet gull.” (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
