David Aikens is shown here in 1981 at his Coast Guard retirement ceremony in Holland, Michigan. Had he not been saved in 1966 by his fellow lighthouse keeper, he would not have been attending this ceremony. David Aikens now lives in Holland, Michigan, but spends his winters in Florida. When David Aikens was the Chief of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Holland, Michigan Search and Rescue Station, he was instrumental in helping to get the Holland Harbor Lighthouse (Big Red) turned over to the local community. He said that his near-death experience at the Los Angeles Harbor Lighthouse changed his life forever. (Photo courtesy David and Wanda Aikens.)
