The gravesite of John Filmore Hudgins at the Pear Tree Cemetery in Onemo, Virginia is now marked with a U.S. Lighthouse Service Memorial Marker. He was a lighthouse keeper at Smith Point Lighthouse in 1895; Nansemond River Lighthouse from 1895 to 1896 and again from 1906 to 1907; Newport News Middle Ground Lighthouse from 1896 to 1899; Windmill Point Lighthouse from 1899 to 1903; York Spit Lighthouse from 1903 to 1906 and again from 1909 to 1919; Craney Island Lighthouse from 1907 to 1908; and Stingray Point Lighthouse from 1921 until his retirement in 1923.
