Shortly after the ten year anniversary of his retirement, and to show that he still had the skills to do lighthouse model making, on February 7, 1974 Godfrey Kiff, Sr., along with his wife Maria, showed off to the press his newest completion of a model of the 1906 Sabine Bank Lighthouse in Sabine Pass, Texas. He said he built this model mostly from tin cans and with simple tools. “Everything functions,” he said, “from the flashing beacon at the top of the lighthouse to the rudders on the two hand-carved boats.”
Little could he have imagined then that many years later, that the Sabine Bank Lighthouse would be on the Lighthouse Digest Doomsday List of Endangered Lighthouses, a fate that became true when the lighthouse was dismantled in 2002. The top half of the Sabine Bank Lighthouse tower and lantern, now restored, are on display at Lions Park in Sabine, Texas. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
