Photo Caption:

This photo, taken on October 9, 1977 by Ken Payton of the McClatchy News Service, shows when the light station was reopened to the public after having been closed since 1967 because the long walkway leading from the top of the seaside bluff down to the lighthouse was considered too dangerous for the general public to use. During the time that it was closed, new safety railings were installed on the walkway and a protective railing was placed around the lighthouse area to prevent people from falling into the ocean. National Park service employee Cindy Curtain is shown here with an unidentified visitor who is walking down the walkway. (Lighthouse Digest archival photo.)
