Captain William J.H. Seikemeyer began his 30-year career in the U.S. Lighthouse Service on the Lightship Swiftsure in 1912. He then served on the lighthouse tenders Manzanita and Rose before transferring in 1925 to be captain on the Hawaiian-based lighthouse tender Kukui for the next 17 years until he retired in 1942. He is shown at the Captain James Cook memorial obelisk located on the Kona Coast of the Big Island shortly after his arrival to Hawaii. (Courtesy Axel E. Anderson Collection)
