Nellie May and Merton Everett Tolman are shown here at their home on Broadway in South Portland, Maine in 1919, eight years after he resigned as the head lighthouse keeper of Matinicus Rock Lighthouse. The couple purchased the home jointly with Nellie’s sister Carrie and her husband Freeman Grant. The Grant’s three children were like siblings to only child Kenneth Tolman. Son Kenneth described his mother as being 5’4” tall with blue eyes and who always wore her long hair in a bun. Merton E. Tolman was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Knights of Pythias. At the time of his death, a local newspaper wrote of him that “He was a communicant of the Congregational Church, a devout Christian gentleman who acted his religion in daily life as he professed it.” (Kenneth Tolman collection.)
