George and Ione Holloway Ward are shown here in July of 1926. George Ward served as the keeper of Sackets Harbor Lighthouse on Horse Island, New York from 1909 to 1926. Previously he served as a lighthouse keeper at Crossover Island Lighthouse in New York from 1908 to 1909 and Detroit River (Bar Point Lighthouse) on Lake Erie from 1906 to 1907. George Ward married Ione G. Holloway, the daughter of Horace G. Holloway, who had been the previous keeper of the Sackets Harbor Lighthouse from 1909 to 1923. The couple had four sons and two daughters. Three of their sons, Edwin G., Frank K., and Oswald, also became lighthouse keepers. When George Ward was transferred to the Oswego Lighthouse in Oswego, New York, his wife Ione had lived 42 years of her life on Horse Island at the Sackets Harbor Lighthouse. Sadly, George Ward’s stay in Oswego was short. A little over a year after he arrived, he came down with pneumonia and died. His remains were returned to Sackets Harbor where he was buried.
