Ship Shoal Lighthouse, built in 1860 and still standing, has an interesting history of strife: political conflicts during the civil war, medical struggles with keepers suffering from lead poisoning, weather turmoil due to multiple hurricanes, and even a physical skirmish that almost resulted in murder. It was automated in 1929 and decommissioned in 1965. Current plans are to preserve it by moving it ashore to Berwick.
