The former 1852 iron lighthouse tower at Head of Passes was deemed unnecessary and moved to become the Pass a l’Outre Lighthouse in 1855. After it was decommissioned in 1930, the iron tower was still used as a lookout by the Coast Guard to monitor rum runners. The tower lost its lantern around 2007. As of 2018, the iron shell is still there, half submerged in the marshlands.
