In 1916, a newly dredged channel to the Atchafalaya River cut through the Point Au Fer Reef and necessitated a lighthouse to mark it. There was also a fog bell, carbide house, boathouse, and five beacon lights at the location. In 1975, the light was decommissioned and replaced by a skeletal tower. When no one wanted to take over immediate stewardship of the abandoned lighthouse buildings, the Coast Guard shamefully burned them down in September of the following year.
