The depicted 1848 South Pass Lighthouse was the third attempt at building a stable light to mark the convergence of the Mississippi River with the Gulf below New Orleans. This wooden lighthouse with its 3rd order Fresnel lens was deemed insufficient by 1868, but it was not replaced until 1881 with a new iron hexagonal skeletal tower with a 1st order lens. Following the completion of the new light, the old building was torn down.
