The 1857 Sabine Pass Lighthouse has seen some exciting history. In 1863, during the Civil War, a battle at the lighthouse ended with 50 dead and 200 wounded. A devastating hurricane with 20-foot flood waters in 1886 swept away all the buildings at the reservation except the tower. The light was decommissioned in 1952 and changed ownership several times. It is currently owned by the Cameron Preservation Alliance, which is in the process of restoring the lighthouse.
