There have been three Chandeleur Island lighthouses built: 1848, 1855, and 1896 respectively. Unfortunately, all three suffered the same fate through relentless hurricanes. Nelson chose to replicate the 1855 structure which was the first lighthouse in the Gulf of Mexico to be captured and relit by Union forces during the Civil War.
