The 1857 Pass Manchac Lighthouse shown here was the fourth attempt to have a stable lighthouse built to mark the pass. The prior three lighthouses, built in 1837, 1840, and 1846 respectively, were either constructed poorly or in locations where Lake Pontchartrain could undermine their foundations by erosion. Eventually, the lake rose to the point where the base of the fourth lighthouse sat several feet underwater and Hurricane Isaac caused its final demise in 2012.
