The Columbia River bar has always been a very treacherous passage, which is why the area is known as the “Graveyard of the Pacific.” It is little wonder that the Coast Guard still maintains an active rescue station and lookout post at the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse. Ships pass between the jetties shown from the tower view as they move into the entrance mouth of the river.
