After William J. Thomas completed six years of service at Burrows Island, he then transferred to Point Wilson Lighthouse in 1914. In 1917, William was commended for following the government’s wartime plan of keepers attempting to grow vegetables at lighthouses. He sent samples of his garden produce to the district inspector, along with a letter detailing his experiments of what did and didn’t work in the sandy soil at Point Wilson.
