Above left: This float at the 1924 Cuban American Exposition Parade in Key West, Florida honors the memory of the explosion and sinking of USS Maine, which was a catalyst that led to the Spanish American War. The sign behind the two men in the front seat of the old truck reads “Remember the Maine and February 15, 1898.” The officer in the back of the truck is standing next to a mine, of the type thought to have sunk the USS Maine. The sign by the mine says, “Spanish Mine Picked Up in Guantanamo Bay by Lt. Fred Muller.” The truck is pulling a float with a model of the USS Maine.
