Photo Caption:

Above: As erosion crept at the foundation of the keeper’s quarters at Barnegat Lighthouse, the government, in an effort to recoup some of their losses, sold the building at auction. When the new owners took what they wanted from the interior, they abandoned what was left of the house to the elements. Locals then gutted the structure and removed as much wood and bricks as they could for their own personal use. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
