Built in 1897, Smith Point Lighthouse is located at the entrance to the Potomac River in the Chesapeake Bay near Sunnybank, Virginia. Walter Shawn served here as a 1st assistant keeper from 1902-1903 and Andrew Sadler served here as a 2nd assistant keeper from 1921-1923. In 1900, the Daboll Trumpets, shown here, replaced the fog bell, which was kept on site as an emergency backup. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
