Robert Matthews served as an assistant keeper at Deep Water Shoals Lighthouse in the James River near Fort Eustis, Virginia from 1918 to 1920. The first name of the lighthouse is sometimes spelled as one word – Deepwater. It was built in 1868 and stood until 1966 when the Coast Guard demolished it. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
