In 1968, Claude C. Asquith, former U.S. Lighthouse Service Tongue Point Depot keeper and deck officer on the lighthouse tenders Manzanita and Rose, penned a long letter to the Oregonian sharing his memories of the five years he had worked closely with Carl W. Leick. Asquith wrote, “In those early 20s, I was a very brash young man, and I am afraid, at that time, did not often show the proper deference to age and dignity, always putting my foot in my mouth as the saying goes, by imitating the ‘high brass’ in manner of speech and characteristics. Unfortunately, or fortunately, our Mr. Leick happened to hear me on several occasions and would gloomily predict that I would come to a ‘badt endt’ someday.” Thankfully, Asquith proved Leick wrong and received both commendations and promotions during his 20-plus years in the Lighthouse Service, even though this 1929 photo shows that he indeed had an attitude.
