Photo Caption:

Carl Leick later changed his Queen Anne design slightly by using jerkinhead roofs where the gables were clipped at the apex several feet back from the ends creating a flat triangular-shaped roof piece that looks almost like the gable is wearing a hood. This 1890s photo of Patos Island’s duplex in Washington shows Keeper Edward Durgan and wife, Estelle, on the left side and Keeper Harry D. Mahler, wife, Louise, and her sister, Katie Rilling, standing between them on the right. (National Archives)
