Showing a hint of his interesting personality in his hands-on-hips stance with his head thrown back, Carl W. Leick enjoys a cigar out in his garden at home. In a letter to Commissioner George R. Putnam in 1910, Leick wrote, “All plans and specifications for stations and structures erected in this district, including Alaska, since entering this office have been prepared by me.” It is evident that Leick has left a great legacy of all the extant lighthouse edifices designed by him that can still be enjoyed over a hundred years later in the Pacific Northwest. And maybe that is why he looks so self-satisfied in this photo. (Courtesy of Joseph and Patricia Leick)
