The keepers at Little Gull Island Lighthouse feared for their lives during the 1938 Great New England Hurricane, also known as the Long Island Express Hurricane, which was one of the most deadliest and destructive to ever strike Long Island and the coast of New England. Fortunately, the sturdy tower and keeper’s house survived, but, as shown here, the light station did suffer severe damage. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
