Rear Admiral George Dewey (1837-1917) visited the McCalls and recollected how he had saved Mississippi’s first Ship Island Lighthouse tower from being blown up by a keg of powder left by the Confederates in the early 1860s while he kept the light going for the Union fleet. A dozen years following the War, Dewey served as the 2nd District lighthouse inspector in 1876 before becoming the Naval Secretary to the Lighthouse Board in 1877. He stayed on the Board until 1881, but he is best known for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during
the Spanish-American War in 1898. (Library of Congress)
