Cornelius Schoonmaker (1839-1889) was also with Dewey on Ship Island, Mississippi, during the Civil War in the early 1860s, helping to protect the light from the Confederates. Schoonmaker served as the 8th District lighthouse inspector in 1877 when Dewey became the Secretary of the Lighthouse Board. As Captain of the Vandalia, Schoonmaker tragically died, along with 42 members of his crew in Apia, Samoa when his ship sank during a hurricane in March of 1889. (Library of Congress)
