Daniel and Elizabeth McCall were transferred to Cat Island, Mississippi in 1899. The second lighthouse, a screwpile built in 1871, was somewhat of a tourist destination as is shown by this 1884 photo. After being given leave to bury her husband, Elizabeth returned to the island a few weeks later and was formally given the appointment of keeper for two months, from July 11 to September 21, 1904 while she waited for a permanent home to be built for her in nearby Gulfport. Her niece and nephew were with her to help her keep the light on Cat Island during that time. After moving to Gulfport, she wrote a book about her life, from which the excerpts in this article were taken. (National Archives)
