Gravestone of Wellman Spear, Sr., who was the lighthouse keeper at Maine’s Whitehead Island Lighthouse from June 5, 1860 to May 31, 1861 when he was removed from his job, probably because of political reasons. His son, Wellman Spear, Jr., served as an assistant keeper at Whitehead Lighthouse. Numerous records and stories have their first names incorrectly spelled as Welman or William, but we have verified that the correct spelling is Wellman. Wellman Spear, Sr. was born on August 13, 1808 and died on April 2, 1882. He is buried at the Seaview Cemetery in Rockland, Maine. Hopefully, the day will come when a U.S. Lighthouse Service Memorial Marker will be placed at his gravesite.
