Isaac Grant (1835-1918) was the lighthouse keeper at Whitehead Lighthouse from 1875 to 1890. For a while, he also taught school for the island’s children in the one-room school house that is located behind the assistant lighthouse keeper’s house. Isaac Grant was married to Abbie Burgess, the daughter of Samuel Burgess, who was the keeper of Maine’s Matinicus Rock Lighthouse from 1853 to 1861. Abbie Burgess was famous for her heroic acts while living at Matinicus Rock Lighthouse. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
