Between the hurricanes and the Confederates, the first lighthouse did not fare well on Cat Island, Mississippi. Besides damage to the tower, hurricanes destroyed the keeper’s dwelling in 1855 and 1860 and the Confederates expelled the keepers and burnt the next screwpile dwelling onshore at the beginning of the Civil War, which accounts for the long gap in lighthouse keeper appointments between 1860 and 1871.
