Photo Caption:

Cat Island Lighthouse had frequent visitors as shown in this early photo. The background information that James Lea gave in the newspaper article was inaccurate in telling the story 30 years later in that Sidney always had an assistant assigned there, he served for only seven years as keeper and he was not old, though other newspaper articles called him an “old citizen” of Mississippi, referring to his long-time residence when he died. It is possible, however, that Sid was a lamplighter on Cat Island during that 10-year gap when the lighthouse wasn’t fully operational. And Sidney’s overnight guests were probably only there when his assistant was on leave, which would be also a good time to get drunk with no one there to report him, seeing as both actions were disallowed in the U.S Lighthouse Service regulations and would result in dismissal of the keeper.
