Florida’s 1873 Alligator Reef Lighthouse, where in 1873, George Richard Billberry became the first keeper of the newly completed 136-foot-tall lighthouse. At a cost of $83,000 it was the most expensive of the Florida Reef Lights to be built; an equivalent today of $2 million. In 2021, ownership of the lighthouse was transferred from the Coast Guard to Friends of the Pool, Inc., a nonprofit that has held an annual eight-mile-roundtrip race to the offshore, spindly-legged tower.
