James Pottinger (1870-1921), shown here with his first wife, Minnie Foster, who he had two children with, was appointed 2nd assistant keeper at Port Austin Reef Lighthouse in 1891. He was promoted to 1st assistant in 1894 and held that position until 1896 when he became head keeper of the Brush Point Range Lights. In 1910 he was back at Port Austin Reef Lighthouse, this time as head keeper, and he served there until his death on February 4, 1921 at the age of 50. He is buried at the New River Cemetery in Port Austin, Michigan. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
