At some point, artist Andrew Winter painted Maine’s Manana Island Fog Signal Station, one of the only fog signal stations in the United States operated separately from a lighthouse. It is located a short distance from Monhegan Island. As shown in this painting from 1899, it had the only known fog signal trumpet tower in the nation. The station was automated in 1988 and for all practical purposes, it was abandoned. In 2002, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2013, the government auctioned off the Manana Island Fog Signal Station into private ownership and it now looks significantly different than it did when this painting was done.
