This is the earliest-known photo of the fog signal cannon at California’s Point Bonita Lighthouse. In the distance can be seen the tower of the first Point Bonita Lighthouse, a 56-foot-tall structure that was built in 1855 and stood 260 feet above sea level. Because it was often obscured by fog, the tower was discontinued when a new lighthouse was built that was only 124 feet above sea level, which was first lighted on February 1, 1877. At that time, it was decided to leave the old lighthouse standing so that it could be used as a daymark. However, when the War Department complained that the old lighthouse interfered with their use of the Point, it was demolished.
