When the first Sand Island Lighthouse was built in 1858, the island was over 400 acres, with enough vegetation for the lighthouse keeper’s farm animals to graze. The tower, the tallest ever built on the Gulf Coast, was only in service for two years when Confederate troops removed the 1st order Fresnel lens. When Union troops regained control of the island, they installed another lens, albeit it smaller, and used the tower as a lookout post. However, Confederate troops returned and were able to secure the island long enough to put explosives at the base of the tower and blow it up.
