It took a number of years after the Civil War for the government to construct this tower that was first lighted on September 1, 1873. Shortly thereafter, the beautiful keeper’s house shown here was constructed. In an effort to curb erosion at the island, the government-built jetties as shown here, but erosion continued to be a problem.
