In an effort to protect the lighthouse, in the 1800s and again in the early 1900s, the government installed boulders around the base of the lighthouse. In 1925 the Lighthouse Service built this dwelling that was perched atop cast-iron pilings. In January of 1919, two keepers of the lighthouse disappeared and were never found. According to the log book, the men had left the island in the lighthouse boat to go and pick up an assistant keeper. Whether their boat got swamped, overturned, or was carried out to sea was never determined, and their bodies were never found. In 1971, the lens was removed from the tower and placed in the hands of the Fort Morgan Museum for display and the lighthouse was deactivated. In 1973, the abandoned keeper’s house was destroyed by a fire, some say by the Coast Guard as a matter of public safety; and others say it was vandals or even natural causes.
