Lighthouse Road wasn’t carved out until the early 1960s, constructed by the Coast Guard after years of negotiations with the landowners over whose property the road was laid. Before the road was laid, the Point San Luis lighthouse could only be accessed by water or foot. Because it winds through buffer lands surrounding the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant, the road is not open to the public. (Courtesy of the United States Coast Guard Historian’s Office)
