The Stephens Island Light, known also as the Takapourewa Lighthouse is located on an isolated island in New Zealand. In 1899, the new lighthouse keeper was reported to have shot more than 100 feral cats in a period of ten months in an attempt to return the island to its pre-feline state. It took 26 years, but by 1925 the island was declared finally free of cats. (Lighthouse Digest archives) Back to the edition of: Sep/Oct 2024
