In this recent picture, you are looking at the east side of the tower where you can see that the paint has been completely removed from the original 125-year old brick surface. But as you move around to the north side–on the right side of this photo–you can see the painted stripes still remain. All the paint will be carefully removed within a few weeks. The sub-contractor is Saffo Contracting from Wilmington, North Carolina and they are using non-toxic and non-destructive blasting and removal techniques to preserve the historic “fabric” of the structure.
