At a short break in greeting well wishers at the Portsmouth Coast Guard Base, Connie Small took a moment to pose for this 100th birthday picture with Tim Harrison (left) and Kathy Finnegan and Bill Thomson, of the American Lighthouse Foundation. Bill met Connie back in the 1940’s and has remained good friends with her ever since. As the end of the afternoon Connie took Tim’s hand and looked him squarely in the eyes and said, “Tim, I have your first issue of Lighthouse Digest; you know, the one with the newspaper print, and now look at how the magazine looks today. I used to have trouble sleeping at night worrying about who will continue to keep alive the memories of the lighthouse keepers and their families, and who will keep telling their stories so they will not be forgotten. As I looked around that room last night and saw all those people, (referring to those in attendance at her birthday party at the American Lighthouse Foundation annual event), and how you brought all this together, I know that I don’t have to worry anymore.”
