In 2014 the nonprofit Maine Street Vermilion formed a committee not only to preserve the lighthouse but also to install a lens in the tower. On September 15, 2016 over 500 people attended a relighting ceremony at the lighthouse.

The structure was built in 1991 as an exact replica of the original Vermilion Lighthouse that once stood in Vermilion.
